Keep Calm and be thankful…

Wow! *in shock* words cannot be construed to express my shock on how this year has gone so fast. Here I was thinking speed of light was fast, until I met months of the year[Oh well! I had to exaggerate] it is that fast. But I am thankful to see this month and I am sure you are too. You ask thankful for what? thankful for Life- Life is the mother of all blessings. Without life, there won’t be ‘a beating heart’ thankful for family, friends, health, love, peace of mind, prosperity, knowledge, wisdom and YOU. We may not have all what we sought for, from the beginning of the year, but trust me, if we think deeply; we will see that there are so many things we never sought for this year but they are ours or some impromptu goals were accomplished. There’s always something to be thankful . Let’s make thanksgiving an attitude and not an ‘event’, for the rest of our lives. Have a blessed month of December!

As we journey through the last days of 2013, we will have reasons to rejoice, in Jesus’ name.Amen.

I am thankful for——–    Let us know by leaving a comment!

We also sympathize with the families and friends of those who have lost someone this year, we pray that the Lord will give you the fortitude to carry on and celebrate the life that he/she lived. Amen!

INSPIRING BAY: Are you ‘Mad’? Yes, I will love to be!

Aaaaaah! Eh! Mad? I’m sure that was your reaction as you read the title. That’s quite understandable but I have no doubt you will come to terms with me after going through this post.

You see, When Mr. Hussein Barrack Obama told his friends he wanted to change his office to the Presidential White House in Washington D.C, they all laughed at him and some asked him: “Are you mad?” Of course he was “mad” and that’s why he is the most powerful man in the world today!

When Mary Slessor, that little innocent 18 year old Scottish girl, told her mum that she was going to Africa to stop the slaughter of twins and eating of humans, her mother screamed aloud: “Are you mad?” Yes indeed, she was “mad” and that is why she is today on the currency notes in Scotland!

When Dr. Daniel Kolawole Olukoya dropped his PhD in Molecular Genetics from University of Reading, United Kingdom (Researcher of over seventy publications to his credit) to obey the Lord, his friends queried him: “Are you mad?” But today, the whole world is dumbfounded with what God is doing through their unqualified “mad” friend!

When Nikola Tesla, the Serbian American inventor and Electrical Engineer said he could transmit sound and signals to people from one city to another city without the use of telephone cables, his friends in amazement bombarded him with the question: “Are you mad?” But today, he is the inventor of the wireless technology and high frequency alternators, turbines, etc.

Oh, the hard truth is that until you become “mad” concerning your life goals, you will remain in the crowd! Being “mad” means refusing to use your brain to consider all the obstacles challenging your goals! A man/woman that pursues his/her vision against all odds is called a mad man until that vision manifests; and he/she becomes a hero! A wise woman once shared this with me:I wish I had known what I know today many years ago when I wrote a novel at the age of 17, I would not have listened to the words of my uncle who was a literature guru then. I gave him the novel and asked for his review of my work, and he said to me ‘ ah ah, this will go nowhere; don’t bother writing again’ and that was the end. Those words would still have been lingering in my head if not for Christ. Whatever you want to do, do it; if it does not work out, you will find another way to make it work.

It may also interest you to recall what they said about Jesus Christ Himself in (John 10 vs. 20) KJV: “And many of them said He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?” But today, is Jesus Christ, the one whom they called a “mad man”, not the GREATEST AUTHORITY in the universe?

Friends, please take heed! of a truth our future depends on many things, but mostly on US [YOU]. We must not give the world the opportunity to define us or permit their shouts to limit us. Remember, Blind Bartimeaus and the woman with an issue of blood were shouted at, but they got their healing. We must never follow the crowd no matter their opinion! We can succeed if nobody else believes in us, but we will never succeed if we don’t believe in ourselves!

Defy that medical report or reports of the economy! let us defy what people are saying and go after our goals with singular determination to win at last, just be “azuanuka”[a person that chooses to turn a deaf ear/their back to negativity]! Indeed, only “mad men/women” rule the world! Till we are asked: “Are you mad?” We will not be celebrated! let’s hold on and hold out!

the answer consists of a word in this picture

I’m a Nigerian movie, I can be categorized under the suspense and thriller genre.

I am starred by an actor that won the ‘Best Lead Actor’ in the 2013 Nigerian Movie Awards, and an actress that won the ‘Best Actress in Leading Role’ in the 2006 African Movie Academy Awards. ‘I see Him’ by Frank Edwards as the background music. So who am I?

Ok! I will like to say that I am giving you my word [my word is my bond] on this movie, it is exceptional and different from the beginning to the end. I am aware that some ‘Nollywood Movies’ [Oh ok! let’s say 70%, be nice!] are seen in  the negative light. [Nollywood is going higher, say Amen Somebody!] *Crowd shouts Amen!* But be rest assured that this is part of 30%. It has a lovely inspiring, moral message to it.

So yeah! who are the two people, that will get the giveaway? The first two people to give the correct title in the ‘comments section’ with your email address and name. The winners will be announced by tomorrow afternoon. Have fun searching!!

God loves you so much, He will never leave you nor forsake you. Always remember this.

Let’s talk-You say I’m past and I tell you I’m present!

Well! I thought one of the ancient traditional, fetish, myths in some parts of the Eastern region of Nigeria have been forgotten or rather neglected over the decades until  recently a story of two love birds whose intention to marry was stopped abruptly because the lady’s family is of the “Osu” lineage. Permit me to tell you a bit about this ancient myth of the Osu Caste.
The Osu caste system can be traced back to an indigenous religious belief system practiced within the Igbo tribe in Nigeria. It is the belief of many Igbo traditionalists that the Osus are people historically owned by deities and are therefore considered to be a ‘living sacrifice’, an outcast, untouchable and sub-human. People regarded as modern-day Osu in Igboland are descendants of individuals who volunteered and were sacrificed to the various gods, their fore-fathers pledged themselves and their descendants to these gods, they enjoyed protection and privileges but were segregated from ordinary folks .The osu caste is determined by one’s birth into a particular family irrespective of the religion practiced by the individual, once born into Osu caste, this Nigerian is an outcast with limited opportunities or acceptance regardless of his or her ability or merit”.

Ada and Michael (not real names) met each other for the first time at an event in Enugu state in Nigeria, this was shortly before both of them traveled to United kingdom to study for their masters degree program at different universities, although they stayed at different cities in UK, they kept on communicating with each other. Sometimes they pay each other visits, their love and relationship kept on growing stronger every day. They were convinced that they are meant for each other, they agreed to marry after their studies when they return back to Nigeria.

In 2011, both of them completed their degree program and decided to get their post study visa extension to enable them stay back for two years in UK to get some work experience before going back to Nigeria. In 2012, Micheal called his parents to tell them that he has found the lady he wants to spend the rest of his life with, his parents were very happy to hear the good news especially his mother who didn’t waste any time to sing joyfully on the phone that she has gotten a daughter in law[proper African mama]. Michael’s father requested for the Ada’s family name and the name of the community she came from so that they can ask questions about the family as their tradition demands. Michael happily obliged, gave his dad all the information(s) he needed. His dad promised to call back to tell him what he found about Ada’s family.

Two weeks later, on a Thursday evening, Micheal came back from work and was about to take a shower, then his phone rang he was so excited to see that it was his dad calling from Nigeria he quickly picked the call, lo and behold; that was the call that broke his heart, the call that took away his joy. His father called to warn him to stay away from Ada if he still want to be his son. Micheal could feel the anger in his father’s voice when he told him that he won’t allow him to bring the wrath of the gods upon their family by having an affair with an osu, he told Micheal that it is a taboo to marry Ada’s kind , when his father was talking, Micheal could hear his mother crying at the background cursing Ada for trying to bring abomination into their family.

Micheal tried all his best to convince his parents that the Osu myth was a thing of the past and that as Christians, Jesus has disconnected  them from  any ancient diabolical cultures. But all his explanations didn’t change his parents’ mind about Ada. As soon as the call ended, he got a call from Ada. Her voice was screaming ‘distraught’, it was different, just like someone who has been crying for a long time. On hearing the tone of her voice, his heart skipped in fear, Ada tearfully told Micheal that she was a month pregnant for Him[as they got involved sexually and regretted as they promised to wait till they were married],it felt as if his world was crashing down. Now,  Micheal is a devastated young man left with two options: either he marries Ada and be disowned by his family and community or he obeys his family by staying away from Ada, the love of his life and his unborn child. [it is not a movie]
Lovely people, what should Michael do? [abortion is not an option at all].Also, this Osu Caste System is it as strange to you, as it is to me?[I thought it has phased out(Christianity taking over)] Do you have any knowledge of it to share with us? How do you think this can become extinct[what should be done]?

SUPERHUMAN- Is your focus shifting?

You are not  spiderman!
Gen 3: 6 “And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband and with her; and he did eat’’
I had wanted to write down my reflections on this subject, Focus, much earlier today, albeit in a less academic manner. Armed with my writing materials, the internet and my accumulated thoughts on the subject, I started in my normal manner of writing, one which seems to have become a pattern over the last few years for me. OK, I needed to check up a few definitions on the internet- a pretty much linear requirement for the modern-day writer, very harmless. I go on the internet, but almost immediately an urgent email comes up on my smartphone (don’t we all love those techy distractions!) that required an immediate reply. I start to reply, but then I remember I have to make an urgent phone call to a colleague. I place the call to the colleague and soon enough, while on the phone, a friend sends an ‘instant message’ to me via Facebook asking if I was interested in a new business idea he had (of course I was!). And then, we start an impromptu business chat.

Suddenly, perhaps by no conscious compulsion of mine, I had completely lost focus of the original reason why I had entered into that writing atmosphere- which is to write. Don’t we all go through instances like this daily?

Procrastination has been described as the ‘worst’ kind of thief to anyone on this life’s journey, a thief of time, by many philosophers. Well, if procrastination is a ‘thief’, then perhaps I would describe the centre of interest or activity, hence the ability to lose focus, as a co-thief alongside the bad habit of procrastination. And from the verse in the Bible above, we can see that it has had a historical vice-like grip on humanity.

In Genesis chapter 2, Man and Woman were shown trees in the Garden of Eden, which they should eat from and then a particular tree in the Garden which they were instructed not to eat from. The focus, was to be on the trees in the Garden which they should eat from, to satisfy the universal human need arising from hunger. It was that simple an instruction. However, in Genesis chapter 3, the focus shifted to the tree that they were not to eat from. The woman, Eve focused on the wrong tree so much that she then saw some ‘qualities’, which she had previously not seen when she had her focus on the trees that she was allowed to eat from. Gen 3:6, tells us that she then saw the bad tree as (a) good for food (b) pleasant to the eyes (c) a tree to be desired (d) a tree that could make one wise (e) a tree that contained fruit good for sharing and giving. Five previously seen ‘qualities’ of a tree, which was not where her focus should have been. She focused on the wrong item for so long, dwelled her mind on it, her mind convinced her that the tree was actually ‘good’ and she ate its fruit, thus ultimately loosing focus and losing her position with and in God.

Now imagine if she had not dwelled on the wrong item? She probably would not have seen any ‘qualities’ it had. She probably would not have eaten the fruit thereof and she probably would not have lost focus ultimately. That is the same thing that happens when we allow side distractions and side attractions to swerve our mind from what our mind was ideally focusing on prior to their arrival. Our mind convinces us that there is some gain in the distractions and attractions; our mind perhaps gives us beautiful scenery of these gains and convinces perhaps the most brilliant of us, that we could actually multitask. We pursue those distractions and side-attractions and it tempts us further, with more beautiful offerings. More often than not, those distractions ends up as distractions and the real purpose we had for the day does not get achieved. We continue the next day, and once again, the cycle of distractions continuous, like a macabre vicious circle.

How do we deal with staying in line with whatever one is pursuing and not losing focus? Well the first step is by admitting that there is the tendency for us to loose focus. Unlike what Hollywood movies tell you, we are not superhuman. We cannot deal with a primary aim, project or assignment while dealing with distractions around and expect to deliver successfully on all fronts. No, life does not work that way. Hence we should know our priorities and convince our mind that what is the priority for that moment, takes precedence over others.

Then the next step is to shut one’s mind towards those distractions. Like in my earlier example, shutting my mind of those distractions would have been simple actions like shutting down all social media avenues, putting the phone on silent and making simple plans to complete those other actions only after I had worked on what is my priority. Usually the mind works faster and more effectively when it focuses on subject, remembering that the start-up of other projects depends on the successful conclusion of the present one. Efficiently, and effectively, the task is done and the project is completed, focus kept in position. It is less difficult than we think.

And yes, that was what I did, hence I am able to write and finish writing. I hope this helps and this presents you with perhaps a different and more effective way of keeping the mind and body focused on a task, away from distractions. Eve made a perhaps, fatal mistake as she could not keep herself focused on what was right, what was needed. If she had been focused on the good tree, maybe life would have been different. Just, maybe. For now, this small piece is written to help make sure our minds are focused on tasks they should be focused on, and the influence of distraction should be limited if not thoroughly negated.

I hope this helps. And yes, I am on to my next task- thanks for reading!
